Pfizer Inc. has received Food and Drug Administration approval for Viagra, the first medication to treat erectile dysfunction.

Viagra, which is manufactured by Pfizer, is the first of a new class of drugs called PDE5 inhibitors. It works by relaxing blood vessels in the penis, allowing blood to flow into the penis when sexually aroused.

According to the, the medication's effects last up to 4 hours, giving it the nickname “the weekend pill.”

Viagra is the first of a new class of medications called phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors, which were developed and approved by the FDA in 1998 to treat erectile dysfunction.

The medication’s U. S. patent for Viagra has expired and will soon be available in the U. market, but the FDA hasn’t approved it.

Viagra and similar medications work by relaxing blood vessels in the penis, allowing blood to flow into the penis when sexually aroused. But unlike other PDE5 inhibitors, Viagra doesn’t increase blood flow to the penis.

“Today's approval provides men with more options to treat erectile dysfunction,” said Dr. Steven Nissen, an urologist and assistant professor at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

“This approval provides men with more options to address erectile dysfunction, and it may help men to get back on their feet again.”

Pfizer has received approval for its new-fangled Viagra, produced by Pfizer, in the U. market.

The drug’s manufacturer, Eli Lilly & Co., has received Food and Drug Administration approval for the drug’s U. application for its U. rights in the erectile dysfunction drug.

Selling pharmaceutical companies are required by the U. government to ensure that their medicines have been reviewed by the FDA before selling them to consumers.

Pfizer’s patent for Viagra expired in the United States in June 2006, and it was expected to be available in the U. market by the end of 2008. However, the FDA didn’t give the patent a green light until November 2008, which was after Pfizer had filed its application with the FDA.

A Pfizer spokeswoman said “we understand the challenges of our patent application process.”

Pfizer’s application for Viagra has been pending in the U. federal court system for more than a year. The patent on the erectile dysfunction drug has already expired, but the drug’s manufacturer, Eli Lilly, says it’s available in the U.

Lilly, the world’s largest pharmaceutical company, had hoped to market Viagra soon after its patent expired in June 2006, but the drug’s maker, Pfizer, had hoped to sell the drug in the U.
